Katie and the Blue Bellied Lizard
A Backyard Tale of Friendship and Courage
When a tiny blue-bellied lizard scampers into Katie’s shady spot under the California Pepper Tree, an unexpected friendship begins. The lizard is scared, tired, and running from a hungry snake. Katie is warm, welcoming, and always in need of someone to chase the flies away.
about the author
Karen Swedlove is a former high school science teacher who believes that curiosity begins with observing—watching animals, asking questions, and paying attention to the small details of everyday life. Many of the stories in this book are inspired by the home where her children were raised, the family dog, and the small blue-bellied creatures often seen basking in the front and backyard.
Throughout her teaching career, Karen shared her classroom with one or more pets such as fish, snakes, rats, mice, lizards, and insects. She discovered that animals naturally invite calm, kindness, and thoughtful engagement. Observing, caring for, and learning alongside living creatures helped students connect science to empathy and real-world understanding—an approach that continues to shape her storytelling.
