Karen Swedlove is a former high school science teacher who believes that curiosity begins with observing—watching animals, asking questions, and paying attention to the small details of everyday life. Many of the stories in this book are inspired by the home where her children were raised, the family dog, and the small blue-bellied creatures often seen basking in the front and backyard.
Throughout her teaching career, Karen shared her classroom with one or more pets such as fish, snakes, rats, mice, lizards, and insects. She discovered that animals naturally invite calm, kindness, and thoughtful engagement. Observing, caring for, and learning alongside living creatures helped students connect science to empathy and real-world understanding—an approach that continues to shape her storytelling.
Now retired, Karen continues her lifelong support of students through active involvement in her local Rotary Club, where scholarships and community programs allow her to encourage learning and growth beyond the classroom. With more time to reflect and observe the rhythms of daily life, storytelling became a natural extension of her lifelong curiosity. The characters and settings in this book are drawn from real experiences—family, pets, and many peaceful afternoons spent listening, watching, and imagining stories beneath the shade of a beloved California pepper tree.
